Clegg Breaks Ground on £16m Health Faculty for University of Sheffield

Clegg Construction has commenced work on a major new health facility at the University of Sheffield, marking the start of a £16 million development that will support world-leading research into neurodegenerative diseases. The project will see the expansion of the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), which plays a vital role in advancing research into conditions such as motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s, dementia, and multiple sclerosis. Located on the corner of Glossop Road and Clarkehouse Road, the Faculty of Health Phase 1 scheme involves the demolition of existing buildings at the Barber House Annex and Central Garages site. In their place, a modern three-storey facility will be constructed, complete with new landscaping and external works. The building will be physically linked to the existing SITraN centre via a dedicated corridor, extending laboratory space and enhancing opportunities for collaboration between university researchers and clinicians at the neighbouring Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It will also include flexible teaching areas, office space, and workspaces for students, staff, and visiting academics. Designed to blend with the university’s wider campus, the development will create a new frontage on Glossop Road, with two storeys visible from the main road and a third at the rear, responding to the natural slope of the site. Craig Gibbons, contracts manager at Clegg Construction, commented: “This is our fourth contract with the University of Sheffield, and we’re delighted to have started on site. SITraN is renowned for its groundbreaking research, and this development will further support its critical work while strengthening links with the clinical teams at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.” The scheme has been designed by architect Bond Bryan, with Ridge providing structural engineering services. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2026. Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Wolverhampton MP reopens historic Royal Hospital as Nightingale House

Wolverhampton MP reopens historic Royal Hospital as Nightingale House

Rt Hon Pat McFadden, Labour MP for Wolverhampton South East, has opened Nightingale House, the new name for the former Royal Hospital.  To celebrate the official opening, residents living at Nightingale House and partners involved in the transformation welcomed Rt Hon Pat McFadden for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.   The historic site, which had stood empty since its closure in 1997, has been revitalised as part of a wider area transformation made possible through the collaborative efforts of whg, City of Wolverhampton Council, Homes England, the West Midlands Combined Authority and developer Morro Partnerships.  Through careful restoration, the Grade II listed building has been transformed into 38 one- and two-bedroom apartments, available for affordable rent as part of a housing scheme for people over the age of 55.   The renovation maintains the building’s architectural heritage, including three stained glass windows installed in the chapel in 1967. The building also features new modern eco-friendly amenities such as air source heat pumps for heating to reduce its carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency.  Earlier in the day, former hospital staff also gathered for a reunion event to share their memories of working life at the Royal Hospital. In addition, a blue plaque  sponsored by the Royal Hospital Nurses League, was unveiled. Sir Stephen Moss, who has dedicated 57 years to the NHS, unveiled the plaque to celebrate the legacy and care of Wolverhampton NHS staff.   Gary Fulford, Group Chief Executive, at whg, said: “I want to thank Rt Hon Pat McFadden for marking this momentous occasion with us.  “The former Royal Hospital building has stood empty since 1997, however, its historical significance as a place for people, and a place of care, has been preserved through our innovative wellbeing scheme.   “This remarkable transformation has only been possible through the power of partnership, with Nightingale House setting the standard for what is possible in the regeneration of historic buildings. Now, the site offers a supportive environment where residents can live independently while enjoying communal spaces that foster a sense of community.  “It’s been a pleasure welcoming everyone to the official opening of Nightingale House and celebrating the thriving community that has been established here.”   Commenting on the opening of Nightingale House, Matt Moore, CEO at Morro Partnerships said: “This project has been about so much more than just a regeneration; it’s the start of a vibrant new community, contributing to the wider area and supporting the lives of local people, all of which is at the heart of Morro Partnerships.   “We are proud to have worked alongside whg, City of Wolverhampton Council, and Homes England to bring this vision to life, providing much-needed, high-quality homes for the over 55s in Wolverhampton.   “The excitement surrounding today’s grand launch, coupled with the touching reunion of former hospital colleagues, truly highlights the importance of this site to the city. We are grateful to Rt Hon Pat McFadden for his support in marking this significant step forward.”  City of Wolverhampton Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Housing, Councillor Steve Evans, said: “The former Royal Hospital is an iconic building in Wolverhampton and has played a huge part in the lives of so many of our citizens.    “whg and Morro Partnerships have made a remarkable job of restoring and converting it to much-needed housing and created a community for our over 55s residents.    “It is also in keeping with the wonderful transformation of the Royal Quarter as a whole over recent years where the council has worked tirelessly with partners to regenerate the area as a key gateway to the city centre, driving further investment and giving our residents and businesses opportunities to thrive.”  Owned and managed by whg, Nightingale House is its seventh wellbeing scheme, offering affordable rental homes for people aged 55 and over. The scheme has a dedicated wellbeing officer, meaning residents can maintain their independence and live in their own home, whilst knowing there is someone on hand if needed.  For more information about life at Nightingale House, please visit whg.uk.com/nightingale-house  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

NHS Property Services announces construction of £12million Northwood & Pinner Health Centre

NHS Property Services announces construction of £12million Northwood & Pinner Health Centre

NHS Property Services (NHSPS) is delighted to announce that construction is underway on the Northwood & Pinner Health Centre, a state-of-the-art facility set to open in the summer of 2026. This project represents a significant investment of £12 million in the Hillingdon area. A groundbreaking event held on Wednesday 7 May was attended by representatives from health, property and construction partners including Emily Curtis, Director of Capital and Infrastructure at the Department of Health and Social Care. The project is a refurbishment and extension of a locally listed building, transforming it into a modern 1,500 sqm health centre. Originally constructed in the 1920s and used as a cottage hospital during the war, the building had been vacant since the late 2000’s. The building still retains historical elements such as the founder’s plaque and memorial beam, which will be prominently displayed in the new scheme. The project also includes rationalising the estate, enabling important value release from the disposal of surplus land, with 100% of the disposal proceeds recycled into the construction of the new health centre. NHSPS alongside the NHS North West London and new occupiers have worked collaboratively for over five years to ensure the delivery of this important project for Hillingdon. The project was approved by the NHS North West London and DHSC via the NHS Business Case process with all proposed occupiers agreeing leases for the new building, working closely with the design team to ensure the building matches their healthcare delivery requirements.  The new health centre will offer a range of services including district nursing, ambulatory wound care, health visiting, school nursing, a diabetes clinic, bladder and bowel care, a GP surgery, diabetic eye screening, mental health services and talking therapies.  The facility will also feature three garden areas, cycle stores, staff showers, collaborative meeting spaces, EV charging stations, water efficient flow restrictors and new trees and planting to increase biodiversity. Additionally, air-source heat pumps, LED lighting and thermal efficient building fabric will be used to improve the building’s energy performance.    At this week’s groundbreaking event Adrian Powell, Director of Investment and Development Management for NHSPS, said: “Northwood and Pinner is a key hub that is used by thousands across the locality. We are breathing new life into the building, creating a state-of-the-art facility to serve its community and deliver excellent patient care.” Claire Eves, Service Director for Outer London Services, added: “Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWLFT) is proud to support the redevelopment of the Northwood and Pinner Cottage Hospital into a modern health centre. This project represents a significant investment in local healthcare infrastructure, aiming to enhance the delivery of both physical and mental health services to the community.” Joan Butfield, Chair, Carepoint Patients’ Participation Group said: “It is great to see work start on the new centre, it has been a long time in the planning. It will be wonderful for the doctors and patients to have a fit for purpose surgery. We cannot wait.” Mr Desraj Dahele, Chair, Acre and Acrefield Surgery, Patients’ Participation Group commented; “Wonderful news regarding the new Northwood Health Centre building opening next year. It will allow more services to be available for local patients, a better workplace for doctors and staff, plus improved facilities for all.” William Logan, Managing Director of Logan Construction SE Ltd, added: “We are excited to have been awarded, via the ProCure23 Framework, the Northwood & Pinner Health Centre project. We look forward to collaborating closely with our client, NHS Property Services, to successfully complete this important facility. Our commitment is to deliver high-quality work within the agreed timelines and budget, and we plan to engage with our partners at every stage of the process. We are confident that Logan Construction’s expertise and dedication to quality will enable us to deliver a state-of-the-art health centre. This new facility will not only provide essential services but also create a welcoming environment for both patients and healthcare professionals. As a Principal Supply Chain Partner (PSCP) within the ProCure 23 Framework, we are eager to continue strengthening our partnerships with NHS Trusts and look forward to achieving a successful outcome for NHS Property Services on this project.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

New Car Park Paves the Way for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Redevelopment

New Car Park Paves the Way for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Redevelopment

Preparations are officially underway for the transformation of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, as RG Carter is appointed to deliver a new multi-storey car park ahead of the hospital’s planned rebuild. The £18 million scheme will see a 1,310-space car park constructed on the site of the former Inspire Centre, which was demolished in 2023. This critical infrastructure will serve as a key enabler for the much-anticipated replacement of the hospital, which is currently scheduled to begin construction in 2027–28. The new Queen Elizabeth Hospital will be built on the footprint of the existing main car park, necessitating the creation of alternative parking facilities to maintain patient and staff access during the redevelopment phase. RG Carter’s appointment as main contractor marks a significant milestone in these enabling works. This development follows the government’s recent confirmation of a funding envelope between £1 billion and £1.5 billion for the delivery of the new hospital. The existing building, which has long suffered from structural concerns due to its use of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), has been deemed unfit for the future. Construction of the multi-storey car park is due to commence in early 2026, and it will play a vital role in ensuring operational continuity as the wider transformation of the site begins. Once complete, it will provide modern, efficient parking facilities and clear the way for the next chapter of healthcare provision in the region. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust is working closely with delivery partners and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to services throughout the build process. Pitsea to Welcome £54m Diagnostic and Community Health Hub

Plans have been confirmed for a major new health facility in Essex, with modular construction firm MTX Contracts appointed as the preferred builder for a state-of-the-art community diagnostic centre (CDC) in Pitsea. The £54 million project, which will be developed on the former site of a leisure centre and library in the town centre, is set to become the largest diagnostic facility in mid and south Essex. Construction is expected to commence later this year. Designed as a two-storey, multi-functional healthcare hub, the Pitsea CDC will house a full suite of diagnostic services including CT and MRI scanners, X-rays, blood testing, and an eight-room endoscopy suite. The facility will also serve as a vibrant community space, with wellbeing amenities such as a purpose-built activity centre and a brand-new library incorporated into the design. Michael Thorpe, Portfolio Director at the Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said: “By bringing services under one roof, we’re making healthcare more convenient and accessible for local residents. With Pitsea being our largest CDC, we’ll be able to treat more patients quickly and locally—offering essential diagnostic tests without lengthy travel or delays.” The project is being delivered in collaboration with Essex County Council and Basildon Council, with a focus on improving healthcare infrastructure and community wellbeing across the region. MTX Contracts, a Cheshire-based firm known for delivering modern healthcare buildings, brings its expertise in modular construction to the scheme. Managing Director David Hartley highlighted the use of offsite manufacturing and modern methods of construction, allowing for faster build times, reduced disruption, and lower environmental impact. “Our approach ensures quicker delivery, better value, and ultimately faster access to vital healthcare services,” Hartley noted. “It means the Trust can begin using the facility sooner, improving outcomes for patients and staff alike.” Once complete, the Pitsea CDC will play a central role in reshaping how diagnostics and community services are delivered in Essex, helping reduce waiting times and supporting earlier detection and treatment. Sterile Services Department and aseptic pharmacy in Southampton marks Practical Completion

The completion of two advanced healthcare facilities at Southampton’s Adanac Health and Innovation Campus marks a significant step forward in improving regional healthcare services. This milestone, celebrated by developer Prime plc, University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust (UHS), Willmott Dixon, Macquarie Group and IHSS, emphasises the growing impact of public-private collaboration in the healthcare sector. Located within the campus’s Plot 2, the new facility houses a highly specialised aseptic pharmacy and Sterile Services Department. The facility will also manufacture sterile medicines for University Hospital Southampton and other NHS providers across the region. A key highlight of the pharmacy’s capabilities is its upcoming production of TBN, a vital drug for premature babies, which will be produced exclusively at this facility for the entire Southern UK region. To ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and safety, the facility’s construction involved both the main contractor, Willmott Dixon, and Enblock Ltd, a specialist contractor in delivering design and build Cleanrooms. This collaboration reflects the importance of attention to detail and the operational excellence needed to support this critical healthcare service. The new development is also a testament to sustainability, achieving BREEAM Excellent certification and featuring numerous photovoltaic panels to generate clean energy. Working in partnership with service delivery partner IHSS, the project highlights the success and value of public-private partnerships in addressing the growing demands of healthcare infrastructure. The facility will support UHS, one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals, by alleviating space constraints and bolstering the hospital’s ability to provide cutting-edge care to patients. Phil Holland, Chief Investment Officer at Prime, commented: “These new facilities are a critical step in enhancing Southampton’s medical capabilities and preserving vital clinical space for UHS. They represent a strong collaboration between public and private sectors, with the shared goal of ensuring the region remains at the forefront of healthcare excellence and sustainability.” Sam Morton, Managing Director at IHSS, said: “We are incredibly proud of the collaboration between IHSS, our partners, and the dedicated teams working on this state-of-the-art supercentre. We look forward to the positive impact this facility will have on providing world-class decontamination services in the region. Richard Poulter, Managing Director at Willmott Dixon Construction South, said: “We are proud to have played a key role in delivering these state-of-the-art healthcare facilities at Adanac Health and Innovation Campus. “This project showcases the power of collaboration in addressing the evolving needs of the NHS and the wider healthcare sector. By combining innovative design, specialist expertise, and a strong sustainability focus, we have created a facility that will make a lasting impact on patient care and medical services across the region.” This milestone is just the beginning, with further developments planned for the Adanac Health and Innovation Campus to support UHS’s future expansion and to continue advancing healthcare delivery in the region. Chiswick Health Centre Opened for Patients

Chiswick Health Centre Opened for Patients

After two years of construction, the new Chiswick Health Centre on Fisher’s Lane is now open to receive its first patients. This purpose-built modern health facility is a joint £23 million project between NHS Property Services (owners of the site), North West London ICB and Hounslow Council. It will house three local GP practices (West4GPs, Chiswick Family Practice, and Chiswick Medical Practice), as well as act as the base for the Chiswick Primary Care Network.  The modern development will improve healthcare services for over 60,000 thousands of residents. The centre will provide a broader range of GP services, including community and mental health services and will also host a range of local activities and ventures to support local health and wellbeing over the coming months. Additionally, 55 affordable homes have been by Hounslow Council built to support key healthcare staff, including nurses and physiotherapists.  NHSPS’ focus for the new building has been to ensure that the Health Centre is not only modern and fit for purpose, but also achieves the highest environmental and sustainable standards – aligning with Hounslow Council’s and the Mayor of London’s environmental commitments to use modern, low pollutant emitting technologies and solutions. This was done by embracing a ‘fabric first’ approach with thermally efficient building fabric and low carbon technologies such as LED lighting and solar photovoltaic arrays. The result of these efforts is a 77% carbon emissions reduction. Plus, greater biodiversity will be achieved with landscaped courtyards, a fifth-floor garden terrace, and a public community green space.  Plus, from 16 April 2025, two group rooms at Chiswick Health Centre will be available for healthcare providers to book on a pay-as-you-go basis through NHS Open Space’s booking platform. One room accommodates up to six people, while the other can host up to ten. Since its launch, NHS Open Space has facilitated more than 3.5 million hours of patient care, with over 7,000 healthcare providers using 1,300+ clinical and non-clinical spaces in 200+ NHS buildings across England. To book, visit https://openspace.nhs.uk/. Adrian Powell, Director of Investment & Development Management at NHS Property Services (NHSPS), said: “Chiswick Health Centre is a major project that has brought together many stakeholders. To see patients and NHS colleagues now being able to use this wonderful building is beyond exciting. This site is one more example of NHSPS’ commitment to bringing excellent patient care through modern buildings.”  Dr Chloe Hillman, GP Partner and Joint Clinical Director, Chiswick Primary Care Network said: “After two years’ absence from the centre in Chiswick, we are thrilled to be moving back to a new vibrant and well-equipped health centre. We can now start the process of delivering the vision we all had at the beginning of this project, providing collaborative, innovative and integrated services that provide quality care to local people. As we mark this huge achievement we now embrace the next chapter with optimism and determination, knowing that we will have a space which will enable us to create a healthier, happier and more vibrant community for generations of residents to come.”  Cllr Tom Bruce, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Assets, Regeneration and Development, said: “The opening of the new Chiswick Health Centre marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to community wellbeing, showcasing a successful partnership between Hounslow Council, NHS Property Services, and NHS North West London. This modern facility not only offers a central hub for health and community services but also includes the provision of 55 affordable homes specifically designed for NHS key workers. Over £1million in Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds were allocated by the Council to support the practical implementation and temporary relocation costs of this project.  “This investment of CIL funds allows us to finance essential public infrastructure that underpins the vitality and sustainability of our borough. By strategically utilising public land and CIL funding, we’ve crafted a development that meets current demands while investing in the future wellbeing and growth of Chiswick. We are exceptionally proud of the foresight and quality this project represents, ensuring that our community’s health and wellbeing are robustly supported now and for generations to come.”  Richard Poulter, Managing Director for Willmott Dixon Construction South, said: “This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering high-quality, community-focused infrastructure that makes a lasting difference. Health and housing are fundamental to people’s well-being, and that’s what makes this project so special. The Chiswick Health Centre represents the best of what we do—building with purpose, collaboration, and a long-term commitment to enhancing lives. Financial Close reached on much-needed key worker housing in Truro

Financial Close reached on much-needed key worker housing in Truro

Prime plc has reached a significant milestone in Cornwall, achieving Financial Close on a key worker accommodation project in Truro, helping to address the critical lack of housing for key workers at Royal Cornwall Hospital. In June 2023, Steve Williamson, CEO of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, highlighted the growing housing challenges faced by hospital staff, which directly impact recruitment and retention, posing long-term risks to maintaining quality care for the community. Prime, a specialist in health and care development, is now working with the Trust to deliver this much-needed key worker housing. The first development site has been identified on Tresawls Road, which has planning permission to deliver 89 new beds for key workers. The site is within walking distance of the hospital and completion of the scheme is targeted for January 2027. This project is part of a broader initiative, and Prime is committed to working long-term with the Trust to identify additional development sites to meet current and future demand. The Tresawls Road site will provide 22 units across 3 blocks of new purpose-built residential accommodation, offering a total of 89 beds arranged in 3, 4 and 5-bed apartments. Nevada Construction Limited have been appointed as the main contractor. Ella Ballatti Stracey, Chief Performance, Partnerships and Transformation Officer at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The key worker accommodation project is fantastic news for RCHT. Cornwall faces significant housing challenges, which many of our colleagues will have experienced firsthand. These challenges have had a direct and definite impact on issues around recruitment and retention, putting a greater demand on colleagues who provide such an integral role delivering care for our patients and community. “All of us at RCHT are incredibly pleased to see key worker accommodation now being provided so close to our Royal Cornwall Hospitals site. We hope this development, along with the promised 35% affordable homes being offered as part of the new Langarth Garden Village, will pave the way for more opportunities to provide sustainable, secure accommodation to our key workers, both from RCHT and the wider public services.” Leighton Chumbley, Chief Executive at Prime, said: “We are thrilled to reach Financial Close on this vital project. The key worker housing initiative in Truro is a testament to our commitment to supporting NHS staff and enhancing community wellbeing. “By providing high-quality accommodation, we aim to improve the lives of those who dedicate themselves to healthcare, ensuring they have a comfortable and convenient place to live.” Prime aims to collaborate closely with end-users and the local community to ensure the delivery of the right facilities in the right locations. Beyond addressing immediate accommodation needs, Prime is committed to creating long-term social value, including employing local workers and using local suppliers to support the economy. The support of the community in reaching and understanding local needs is invaluable, and this effort is crucial to securing the future of NHS services in Truro, strengthening Cornwall as a place to live and work. New photos show inside of National Rehabilitation Centre as plans come to life

The grand feature staircase, modern ensuite bathrooms and solar panels on the roof are now all in place at the first NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), as plans which have been in the pipeline for a decade continue to come to life. The 70-bed purpose-built rehabilitation centre near Loughborough will be staffed and run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and aims to transform rehabilitation in the UK. The £105million NRC programme is part of the New Hospital Programme. As 2025 progresses and the NRC prepares to begin accepting its first patients in the summer, construction efforts at the site near Loughborough continue to gather pace, with more than 200 tradespeople working on the build each day. Inside the building, the statement staircase has been installed in the main atrium where patients will first enter the centre, and bedrooms continue to take shape as bedheads are installed and the en-suite bathrooms fitted. Elsewhere, flooring is being laid and miles of wiring installed. The latest drone footage shows the solar panels in place which will help to power the building alongside air source heat pumps, as well as the metal framework progressing along the outside of the building, ready for the final rainscreen cladding. Ryan McCormack, Head of Commercial and Construction for the NRC, said: “With fewer than six months to go to when we will be welcoming our first patients, it’s exciting to see how quickly the interior of the building is changing on an almost day to day basis. “It’s been a pleasure to see this incredible building emerge from the ground up, and these next few months are where it will all suddenly come to life as more and more of the fixtures and fittings are installed and finishes are complete, ready for our very first patients.” The construction is being carried out by IHP, a joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine. The Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, already home to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre which opened in 2018, was carefully selected as the site for the NRC to bring together these two centres of excellence and drive rehabilitation standards both nationally and internationally. The design of the NRC uses modern methods of construction and will be highly energy efficient, with plans for the building to support the NHS ambition to be Carbon Net Zero by 2045. Work continues to integrate the Smart Hospital design to make the NRC as digitally advanced as possible, with the capability to incorporate additional cutting-edge technology in the future.
